Virgin Atlantic passengers film inside plane before emergency landing

A passenger on Virgin Atlantic flight VS43 which made an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport on Monday after developing a landing gear fault filmed the moment fuel was dumped from the aircraft to re-balance it.

After filming the video from inside the plane and once the flight had landed safely on the runway, Hardeek Desai told the BBC that 30 to 40 minutes into the flight from Gatwick the captain said the plane was to be turned back "due to a hydraulic fault".

He added that people were "screaming and shouting" as they were told to adopt the brace position and the plane landed at the airport.

Another passenger posted a video of cabin crew saying that life jackets will not be needed and demonstrating how to brace.

Passengers were told to listen for an evacuation command from the Captain once the plane had landed.

"Stay calm, read your safety card and practice the brace position," the steward then said.

The Boeing 747 left Gatwick at 11.44am for Las Vegas but had to return to the airport and landed at 3.45pm after circling for several hours.

The flight was met by emergency services and passengers praised the pilot and flight attendants for keeping everyone calm.

Mike Kaufman, who was on the plane, told the Daily Mail: "The landing was smoother than others I've had. It was probably less dramatic on board than it was watching it on TV.

"It is going to go down as one of the greatest emergency landings in history."
