A British mother-of-two has died after achieving her dream of climbing Mount Everest.

Debra Wilding, 49, travelled to Nepal with her daughter Hannah, 23, and managed to call her husband from Everest base camp to tell him they had made it.

But she began to suffer with breathing difficulties on her way back down and stopped for a night at a hotel in Khumjung, where she died on Monday.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Debra's husband said he was taking comfort in the fact she had achieved her goal.

He also said that Hannah was "very very upset", but was coping well under the circumstances.

Local police official Purushottam Silwal told the Metro: "She possibly died of altitude sickness. Her body was airlifted to Kathmandu for a post-mortem."

The Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Nepal on October 6 2014.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."

Altitude sickness can happen when walkers climb to high altitudes too quickly, with the decrease in atmospheric pressure making breathing difficult.
