The BFI's 2013 Statistical Yearbook shows that taking in a movie is becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment, perhaps fuelled by Brits looking for a cheaper night out, with UK box office receipts hitting a record-breaking £1.1 billion.

And the statistics also show an increase in the number of movie-goers over the age of 45.

According to the figures, while cinemas saw a drop in the number of 15 to 24-year-olds in film audiences (from 31 per cent down to 25 per cent), over-45s became the largest proportion of film-goers for the first time, accounting for 36 per cent of cinema audiences.

While it is thought films such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Anna Karenina may have lured the over-45s into the cinema, blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises - which took £56.3 million at the UK box office - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and the latest Marvel Studios offering Avengers Assemble, all proved big crowd-pullers.

Amanda Nevill, chief executive of the BFI, told the Daily Mail: "Three very British superheroes - Bond, Boyle and Bean - helped fly the flag for UK film during the Olympic opening ceremony and our suave British spy led something of an invasion into global cinemas in 2012."

"UK films captivated audiences and 007 speaheaded another strong year for UK film internationally, which collectively pulled in £5.3 billion dollars and helped export British culture and creativity around the world in 2012."
