Israeli Prime Minister installs £83k bed on plane
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was left red-faced when it was revealed he asked for a double bed to be fitted on the plane he used to travel to Margaret Thatcher's funeral.
According to Israel's Channel 10, the fitting of a bedroom cost $127,000 (£83,000).
The custom fittings included four walls and a door installed around a double bed and 22 business class seats fitted to the El Al plane, Israel's national airline.
The Guardian reports that officials defended the move and released a statement saying: "The flight was booked for midnight after a day full of events, and afterwards the prime minister was to represent the state of Israel at a number of official international events, including meetings with the prime ministers of Canada and Britain. It is acceptable for the prime minister of Israel to be able to rest at night between two packed days as those."
According to The Times of Israel, the Prime Minister's Office was not aware that the demand for a bed raised the cost of the flight to $127,000.
The news came at a time when the Israeli media was focused on budget cuts and protests against them.
