Video: Carnival Triumph arrives in port after five days stuck at sea
A cruise ship that has been stranded in the Gulf of Mexico since Sunday has finally made it back to a port in Alabama.
Thousands of passengers were extremely pleased to be back on dry land after five "hellish" days stuck at sea following a fire in the engine room, which cut off the Carnival Triumph's power and propulsion system.
Reports of unpleasant on-board conditions have circulated this week, with stories of human waste flowing through hallways, and people sleeping outside on the deck.
Two tug boats were sent to tow the beleaguered ship back to the nearest port in Mobile, Alabama.
Carnival Cruises CEO Gerry Cahill was at the port when the boat arrived. According to the Daily Telegraph, he said: "We have gotten our guests back to land, and now we need to get them home.
"The most important thing for me at this time, is to go on board and to apologise to our guests. Once I've done that, I will help start the process of getting them off and getting them on their way as quickly as I can.
According to CNN video footage, he also added: "I know conditions on board were very poor, I know it was very difficult. I want to apologise again for subjecting our guests to that. We pride ourselves in providing our guests with a great vacation experience, and clearly we failed in this particular case."
