A man has died after falling from a fell in the Lake District.

A group of walkers went off route after a navigational error and found themselves on steep ground on the east face of Crinkle Crags, according to the BBC.

The Kendal and Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Teams were called on Saturday afternoon, and the man's body was recovered, while other members of the group were helped down.

A helicopter from RAF Valley was called to help, but bad weather conditions hindered its progress in what was described as a "difficult" operation that lasted for seven hours and involved 19 Langdale Ambleside members.

A Langdale Ambleside spokesperson told grough.co.uk: "Unfortunately the group were off route due to a navigational error and were located on horrible steep ground on the east face of Crinkle Crags.

"The man's injuries, sadly, were fatal.

"His body was recovered, and his companions were assisted from the hill in a protracted and difficult rescue."
