A free holiday scheme has been devised to help soldiers in Afghanistan recover from their physical and mental wounds.

The charity, called Give Us Time, will offer soldiers and their families the chance to recuperate on family getaways.

Breaks will also be available to relatives, wives and partners who have lost loved ones in battle.

The project will be supported with help from owners of holiday houses, second homes and timeshares in Britain and foreign shores who are being urged to donate the use of empty rooms and properties.

According to The Sun, a charity source said: "We won't be asking people to donate money - all we are asking is for that unused time."

Former Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox created the new initiative after teaming up with Afghan Heroes, the charity set up by the mothers of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. He told the Daily Mail: "I was heartened to see how we improved the treatment of those who had been physically hurt in combat.

"In terms of psychological trauma – the invisible scars of war – we are making progress, though at a slower rate. One of the areas where there remains room for improvement is the integration of service families into this equation."

Afghan Heroes founder Denise Harris said: "Give Us Time is a fantastic initiative. It will go a long way to helping those who have put their lives on the line to readjust."
