A woman gave birth on a P&O ferry minutes after it left the dock in Calais last Friday - and has even named her newborn baby after the French port.

Tiemoko and Aissada Coulibaly, from Peckham, boarded the Dover-bound ferry at Calais with their two-year-old daughter Karidja-Lilly.

They thought their new baby wasn't due for another three weeks, but just after the 5.45am trip set off, Aissada went into labour, according to the East Kent Mercury.

She was taken into a first aid room, where she gave birth with the help of former midwife, Dee Leir, and staff members Andy McAllister and Shirley Fulton.

Captain Martin Odell received the message about the birth and decided to return to port.

French medics arrived on the ship, called Pride of Canterbury, at 6.26am, and the entire family - including little baby Mariam-Calais - were taken to hospital in the French port.

Both mother and baby are doing fine.
