Vice President Kamala Harris’ step daughter wore a black face mask, wide-collar blouse, and gorgeous, embellished Miu Miu knit coat on Inauguration Day. Emhoff also sported the Loeffler Randall Bobbie Headband over her curly-haired centre parting. And in rocking this particularly stand out outfit, she brought a little Brooklyn energy to this day. This may be the first time some of us are hearing about her, but a cursory look on Twitter and TikTok will show that a growing number of young people are taking style notes from Ella Emhoff, who is in her last year of school at Parsons. Emhoff is every bit the New York fashion studentL She lives in Bushwick, loves eclectic knitwear (that she makes herself!), and prefers more environmentally friendly slow fashion. Even before the inauguration, she was poised to shake up the often traditional Washington D.C. style with her unabashedly artsy taste. And it’s about time! Even Emhoff floated some pretty unexpected options for the usually staid fashion event. In a November interview with Garage, Emhoff said she was considering wearing a handmade knit suit on the big day. “I want to, but like I was saying before, my style and my practice are so different, but I think I might have to just make an exception for such a momentous occasion, I think it does require a pretty momentous outfit,” she said. In the weeks leading up to the inauguration, Emhoff has reportedly kept her mind on her senior thesis and growing her own knitwear brand. Oh, and learning how to tattoo, revealing that she’s already given herself a few stick and poke pieces. Recently, she hosted a raffle for a pair of her Rainbow Brite-inspired knit pants. Meet Amanda Gorman, The 22-Year-Old Poet Laureate Who Stunned At The Inauguration

Though former President Donald Trump was (thankfully) absent from Wednesday’s events, several key speakers and celebrities kicked off celebrations. After Lady Gaga slayed the National Anthem (holding a matching gold microphone, no less), Jennifer Lopez sang a medley of patriotic classics, and Garth Brooks also took the stage — as tradition entails. But the performer whose words moved people the most was Amanda Gorman, the youngest inauguration poet in U.S. history. The 22-year-old, who was the Youth Poet Laureate of 2017, performed a piece called “The Hill We Climbed.” It was incoming first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, who recommended Gorman read at the inauguration, and her piece kept with the theme of the day: unity and hope. She stayed up that night finishing it. Of that surreal day, Gorman wrote, “We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.” She even threw in some Hamilton references, quoting from George Washington’s farewell song, “One Last Time.” “Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid.” She also quoted the line, “History has its eyes on us.” But Gorman was not willing to look away from hard realities. “In my poem, I’m not going to in any way gloss over what we’ve seen over the past few weeks and, dare I say, the past few years. But what I really aspire to do in the poem is to be able to use my words to envision a way in which our country can still come together and can still heal,” she told the Times. “It’s doing that in a way that is not erasing or neglecting the harsh truths I think America needs to reconcile with.” Gorman is set to have a big year. In addition to gaining a national audience following her inauguration performance, Gorman will release two books in September. Her debut poetry collection, which shares a title with her inauguration poem, will be released for teen and adult readers. The same day, her debut picture book, called Change Sings, will also be released. Today marks a new chapter in United States history: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been inaugurated as our new President and Vice President. Though circumstances are unlike ever before, with the array of familia faces in masks as a constant reminder, it hasn’t stopped the new administration and its supporters from attending the 2021 inauguration in incredible style. Among the notable guests are former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, who set the internet ablaze for looking fly (per usual). Obama walked alongside her husband in an elegant burgundy Sergio Hudson power suit, with an equally powerful beauty look to match. The former FLOTUS arrived suited and booted with a side-parted silk press styled in bouncy, flipped-out curls by her stylist Yene Damtew. Obama began trending on Twitter mere moments after gracing our livestreams for the first time today, and it didn’t take long before the word “LAID” (yes, in all caps) also began trending as an ode to her hair. “Michelle Obama is so perfect! Leading up to today’s inauguration, there has been a lot of speculation about what Vice President Kamala Harris would wear to the ceremony. As the first woman, Black, and South Asian American to be vice president, Harris was expected to use her wardrobe to uplift Black talent and emerging American designers — and she did not disappoint. For the historic occasion, the Vice President chose an amethyst-hued look from 2020 CFDA American Emerging Designer of the Year, Christopher John Rogers. From the start of his career, Rogers, who is Black, has championed diversity on the runway. Staging runway shows more akin to celebrations, the designer has become known for his use of electric colors and rich jewel tones and unabashedly optimistic collections. “Thank you, Madam Vice President. We are so honored and humbled to have played a small part in this historic moment,” the brand’s Instagram post wrote next to a photo of Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff. A combination of red and blue (the traditional colours of the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively), purple is a symbol of American unity and bipartisanship. The colour was also prominent during the women’s suffrage movement when it symbolised loyalty. On Tuesday night, Jill Biden wore purple while attending the COVID Memorial at the National Mall in Washington that honoured more than 400,000 Americans who have died since the pandemic took hold. Former First Lady Michelle Obama and former Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also wore outfits — by Sergio Hudson and Ralph Lauren, respectively — in variations of the shade to the inauguration on Wednesday. Harris accessorised the look with her signature pearls — this style is from Wilfredo Rosado — a nod to her Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. According to Elle, her heels are by Sergio Hudson, a Black designer from South Carolina. This look comes a day after Harris wore a coat by Pyer Moss to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Not only is the founder behind the brand, Kerby Jean-Raymond, the son of Haitian immigrants, but Pyer Moss was also one of the first brands to convert its studio into a PPE donation centre. It also provided financial relief to women- and minority-owned small businesses affected by the fallout from the pandemic. If we are to judge the looks from the Vice President so far, Harris is setting a powerful aesthetic tone for the next four years, one that will prominently feature American designers, who not only produce beautiful designs but also possess the strong values to back them up. How Euan Blair dodged the curse of Prime Ministers’ children
My God! Can Euan Blair really be worth £73 million? That’s even more than his moneybags dad, Tony, who’s got a mere £60 million to his name. Master Blair has made the money out of his apprenticeship company, Multiverse, which promotes an alternative to the university system his father championed as Prime Minister. How time flies. Surely it was only yesterday that little Euan made headlines after being found “drunk and incapable” in Leicester Square after celebrating the end of his GCSEs? That was in 2000, when Euan was 16 – he’s now 37 and the CEO of a tech start-up that’s just been valued at £147 million. His success is impressive both in its own right and for what it says about the Blairs’ eldest son. For he is the exception to the rule when it comes to the offspring of Prime Ministers. Usually, the huge fame of being the PM leaves ones children rather in the shade – and the list of political sons and daughters who have struggled to find their own way in life is long and tragic. In recent years, our Prime Ministers have had very young children in Number 10 – David Cameron, Gordon Brown and, of course, Boris Johnson, whose son, Wilfred, is eight months old. Their youth means they haven’t been adversely affected by life in Downing Street, while privacy laws stopped them being photographed – meaning they will be able to go about everyday life unrecognised. Harder, though, for the oldest Blairs, who were approaching their teens when their father won in 1997. That said, I am told that Euan is popular among the Silicon Roundabout crowd, many of whom don’t know who his father is. He apparently networks seamlessly, and his latest round of investment – £32 million, led by American venture capital firm General Catalyst, which previously backed Snapchat and Deliveroo – speaks to that. Multiverse will open a New York office later this month, and there are plans to hire 200 employees across the UK this year. Not bad for a business Euan co-founded in 2016, after a stint at American bank Morgan Stanley. His venture capitalist wife, Suzanne Ashman, who he married in 2013, moves in similar circles. The couple live in a £3.6 million townhouse in Marylebone, near Tony’s London home in Connaught Square, bought for £3.5 million in 2004, and into which Tony and Cherie moved when he stood down as PM in 2007. It is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Blair empire. Cherie has been keen to do well out of property since 1997, when her husband came to power. She allegedly regretted selling their handsome Islington house for £615,000 (today, it’s worth over £3 million). Since then, the family has made up for lost time, building up a £35 million portfolio of 39 homes and flats. Tony and Cherie own a mammoth £10 million pile in Buckinghamshire, formerly John Gielgud’s house, as well as a London mews house, worth £1.7 million. Cherie and Euan co-own 31 flats in Manchester and Stockport. Euan’s younger brother Nicky, 36, a football agent, has a £2.75 million London house. His sister, Kathryn, a 32-year-old barrister, owns two London houses – one bought for £1.4 million in 2015, another in 2018 for £2.4 million. Leo – the baby famously conceived at Balmoral – is now 20 and at Oxford. He is co-owner, with Kathryn, of an £800,000 home near his parents’ Buckinghamshire pile.
