15 dishes to try today for your Thanksgiving feast

Thanksgiving, the national holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada – and now the UK, with apparently one in six of us in Britain now marking the occasion.

The ‘First Thanksgiving’ is thought to have been a three-day celebration in 1621 by the pilgrims at the Plymouth Plantation. It went from a sporadic harvest festival in various areas to a federal holiday since 1863 when Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday, to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.

So, when you’re planning your own Thanksgiving feast, what dishes can you serve up? We’ve got some ideas for you:-
1. Pumpkin soup
If you thought you were done with pumpkins after Halloween, then think again. Pumpkin soup is an easy, healthy starter to put on the menu for Thanksgiving dinner. You could even serve it up in the hollowed-out pumpkin if you wanted to add a bit of theatre. [Photo: Getty]

2. Roast Turkey
Turkey is the traditional Thanksgiving dish – in fact sometimes the holiday’s affectionately called ‘Turkey Day’. And who knows, maybe Prince Harry’s new squeeze Meghan Markle will treat him to her Thanksgiving turkey this year. [Photo: Instagram/meghanmarkle]
