From seeing yourself with puppy ears to swapping your face with your mate's, there's no end to the amount of time you can sink playing with filters on your phone.

But FaceApp – a filter app that contains an option to age a photo of yourself, to get a glimpse what awaits you in the mirrors of 2063 – has gone seriously viral over the past couple of days.

It works by using scarily-realistic artificial intelligence to transform your face into how it might look once you've qualified for a free bus pass. Fine lines and all.

From presenter Mollie King to former WH cover star Vogue Williams, celebs have been all over the #AgeChallenge.

FaceApp: Why do we care about how we age?

So... why are we so hyped on what we (and our friends and family) might look like when collagen has left the building?

'Our brains anticipate future events through a process called anticipatory timing – and apps like this one feed our curious minds,' explains Rebecca Lockwood, a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Coach and therapist.

'Your brain is always interacting with both the past and a predicted version of your future based on previous events to make decisions.

'These two systems together help us to both live in the present and anticipate what's to come. It's human nature to be curious about the future. Things like the app and reading horoscopes are all things that feed that curiosity.'

There's also the fact that we're concerned about how we look, natch. 'It's a fascination created by social media and facial impression in the Instagram era,' adds integrative psychotherapist and Counselling Directory member, Lucy Fuller.

'People are curious to see into the future and what's going to happen. They love to know what their story is going to be.'

And, because why not, WH asked some of our former cover stars if they'd be happy for us to run their shots through the app.

Luckily, they said 'yes'. Scroll on to see – and then check out the big names who've been uploading theirs to the 'gram.
