March 8 is International Women’s Day, and one elementary student clearly knows the power a day without a female can bring.

Laura Moreschi’s 10-year-old daughter wrote a note to her principal asking her to be excused from school on Wednesday so she can participate in the Day Without a Woman protest. Laura posted a screenshot of her daughter’s letter and suggested that it was written after they talked about civic engagement over dinner.

“I would like to participate in the ‘Day Without Women’ protest. I am going to write a letter to the editor, contact my congressman, and do whatever I can to make my voice heard,” the girl wrote. “With your permission I would like to be excused from school this Wednesday. I will talk to my teachers and my schoolwork ahead of time but I would just like you to know the reason of my absents (sic). Thank you.”

The tweet was well received from people across the globe, receiving thousands of shares and likes since it was posted on Monday.

“At the moment only kids give me any hope,’ one user tweeted. “They appear to be much better than we were. So that’s one thing i like about now.”

“Love this!” Another tweeted. “I hope many other girls follow their example and I hope you all you ladies have a wonderful International Women’s Day!”

“We are a force not to be underestimated,” another user stated. “I wear red and write everyone I can think of. I live in Austria.”

One tweet even hinted at a political future for the student: “Perhaps the letter should be signed; sincerely, YOUR future President of the United States of America.”

The Day Without a Woman protest calls for women across the globe to take the day off from paid and unpaid labour, avoid shopping for the day (except at small, women and minority-owned businesses) and to wear red in solidarity.

Women from more than 30 countries are participating in the strike, and the fact that this elementary school student is so adamantly interested in the global call to action gives hope that the fight for gender parity will successfully be passed on to the next generation.
