10 things Shania Twain does to stay fit at 57

57-year-old Shania Twain is a global icon. The country pop star has maintained an unwaveringly loyal following since releasing her first single, ‘You’re Still The One’ in 1998, and she’s still touring 25 years later. The thing that gets us is that even after all those years, she’s still got that very same glow; as though she’s never had a sleepless night in her life (spoiler: she’s had more than a few), and as though she hasn’t aged a single year (she is, in fact, going through the menopause).

So, in the interest of finding her tips and tricks for you all, we took it upon ourselves to research everything Shania has said about staying fit and healthy. Let’s go girls.

1.She wakes up early

In an interview with The Cut, Shania shared that, when she’s not travelling, she wakes up around 6.30-7am every day. Of course, if you're not a morning person, you're not a morning person, but there are certainly benefits to giving yourself a full morning before starting work for the day.

2. She starts her day with a smoothie

‘If I can get raw coconut water, my morning drink is coconut water, avocado and apple in a blender,’ she told The Cut. When she can’t get her hands on coconut water, she punts for ‘blueberries and almonds’, instead. And while some of you might prefer fasted cardio or fasted training, Shania’s the opposite: ‘I try to eat first thing in the morning,’ she said, before showering or getting ready.

3. She plays tennis

She calls the tennis court ‘her gym’, per The Cut. She started playing in 2009, and she loves it for the fact that it distracts her from the idea of working out. ‘I’m concentrating more on the points and having fun,’ she explained. She now plays three to five times a week.

Sound like your kind of jam? Other forms of outdoor sport you could try include netball and football. You could also join a cycling or running club.

4. She loves a walk

When her schedule builds up and tennis is a no-go, Shania turns to walking. She’ll walk to and from ‘an appointment’, and she always goes prepared by wearing ‘running shoes’ and packing her ‘dress shoes’ in her backpack.

ICYMI, walking is an ideal form of NEAT exercise.

5. She pre-empts the need for snacks, and prepares

Not only will regularly hitting up your local Sainos for snacks hit your bank balance hard, punting for processed bars and snack pots won't be great for your health, either. Preparing fresh, homemade snacks is the way to go, and Shania knows the deal. ‘I have a blender in my hotel room everywhere I go,’ she told The Cut, which she uses to make her aforementioned avocado smoothie.

6. She knows the importance of sleep

Sleep is the best medicine. Fact. Everyone knows it, and Shania has learned the hard way. In travelling through various different time zones while on tour, she told The Cut she has to ‘turn her body clock around often’. ‘Sometimes that means I lose sleep, and boy, when you don’t get your beauty sleep, your wellness definitely gets affected!’ she added.

7. She rides horses

If you’re one of Shania’s 2 million Instagram followers, you’ll know she’s also an avid horse rider. She previously shared this video of herself and captioned it, ‘@itv asked me if I wanted to spend an afternoon riding horses and talking to iconic Paralympic gold medallist @nbakerpararider… OBVIOUSLY I said yes.’ She actually owns several horses of her own. The OG horse girl.

8. She adapts her diet to her goals

Speaking to E! Insider in 2018, Shania said that while she tries to be ‘more disciplined’ with her diet as she approaches tour time, she never gets too strict because ‘you’ve got to live’. ‘There is a point where I start weaning off French fries and I start weaning in my green smoothies, but I’m always overall very conscientious about what I eat anyway,’ she explained. A girl after our own hearts.

9. She eats her greens daily

‘I stick to a mixture of real raw, whole-food items every day,’ she told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. ‘I make sure I’m eating greens every day, and nuts, and food that’s not processed. I do that every day.’ That does impress us, much.

10. She acknowledges and embraces her changing body

Upon posing topless for her latest single cover “Waking Up Dreaming”, Shania spoke to People about her changing body as it goes through the menopause, and how it’s affected her confidence.

‘This is me expressing my truth. I'm comfortable in my own skin, and this is the way I am sharing that confidence,’ she said. ‘I think the best fashion is confidence, and whatever you wear — if you're wearing it with that, it's fashionable. I am a woman in my late 50s, and I don't need to hide behind the clothes.

‘I can't even tell you how good it felt to do nude shooting. I was just so unashamed of my new body, you know, as a woman that is well into my menopause. I'm not even emotional about it; I just feel okay about it. It's really liberating.’ What a woman.
