10 most exciting European travel destinations for 2017

The travel gurus over at Lonely Planet have unveiled their ‘Best in Europe 2017’ list, and it’s about to give you some serious wanderlust.

Taking the top spot as Europe’s number one destination to visit this year is Zagreb in Croatia. With the city’s long-awaited airport terminal now open, visitors can now sample the blossoming food and drink scene, thriving street art and sun-splashed squares with ease.

Slightly closer to home is Yorkshire’s largest city, Leeds, which landed fifth place. Along with boasting one of the UK’s finest craft beer scenes and thriving nightlife, the city will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of Leeds Carnival in August – a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.

Also making the list are: Gotland in Sweden, an ancient Baltic island with breathtaking scenery, tranquil sandy beaches and an array of historic sites; Moldova, a country of secret wine cellars and cliff-perched monasteries; the Northern Spanish region of Galicia, where over 1000km of coastline yields pretty fishing villages, hundreds of beaches and delicious seafood; and Pafos in Cyprus – this year’s European Capital of Culture – which boasts sun-kissed shores piled with 5,000 years’ worth of monuments and historic sites.

Lonely Planet’s spokesperson and editorial director, Tom Hall, said: “From cultural adventure to spectacular scenery, Europe has something to offer every traveller.

“We’ve compiled our hotlist of destinations across the continent to visit this summer, all offering something new, exciting or undiscovered that make them worth exploring right now.”
