These are the 10 best islands in the world, according to travel aficionados

From Harpers Bazaar UK

Travel + Leisure has released its annual ranking of several travel categories, including hotels, cities, cruises - and islands.

The below list of the top 10 islands in the world is based on the results of a reader survey, where travel aficionados were asked to use their own experiences to make a judgement call on which islands were the best all-rounders.

The final list includes entries from all over the world, including three from Europe. None of the Great British Isles made the top 10, but we're sure they wouldn't have been far behind.

The general feel of the list is hot, tropical and peaceful. Here are the top 10:

10. Bali, Indonesia

As well as its beautiful paradise beaches and forested volcanic mountains, Bali also has a rich history and culture.

9. Hvar and the Dalmatian Islands, Croatia

You can't get more Mediterranean than these red roofs. Croatia is certainly a trendy holiday destination right now.

8. Ischia, Italy

On top of classic Italian beauty and delicious food, the volcanic island of Ischia also has thermal hot springs.

7. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is nicknamed "The Garden Isle", thanks to it being covered in tropical rainforest.

6. Maui, Hawaii

Maui is home to one of the world's most famous black-sand beaches.

5. Santorini, Greece

Those blue roofs atop white-washed houses are iconic.

4. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Sure to be on everyone's bucket list, the Galapagos Islands are one of the world's richest spots for wildlife.

3. Boracay Island, Philippines

It may be just 4.5 miles long, but that makes Boracay even more of a desirable haven.

2. Hilton Head, South Carolina

This is more of a resort island, with gold courses, beaches and tourist relaxation galore.

1. Palawan, Philippines

This needs no explanation. It was also top of the list for Best Islands in Asia.
